Happy New Year!

The New Year always brings a list of resolutions. According to the global data and business intelligence platform Statista, of the people surveyed who are making resolutions, 46% have a goal of eating healthier and 37% have a goal to lose weight. And according to Forbes, in 2024, 32% wanted to improve diet and 34% wanted to lose weight. These two resolutions tend to work together. If you have a healthier diet, the hope is you will lose weight. This begs the question, what is eating healthier? Based on where an individual is on their health care journey, the answer can be different. To use the same point of reference, I use the USDA recommendations. They have great resources to help define and achieve goals.

Check out https://www.myplate.gov/ to learn more of what a healthy plate looks like for you. Based on the “MyPlate” plan, the USDA recommends the quantity of fruits, vegetables, grains, dairy and proteins for you to consume. When you dig deeper you will see the recommendation of The USDA says to, “choose seafood options that are higher in healthy fatty acids (called omega-3s) and lower in methylmercury, such as salmon, anchovies, and trout.” Skuna Bay Salmon falls into this category.

According to a Forbes Health 2023 poll, most people give up resolutions after less than four months. Only 1% of responders said their resolution lasted for 11-12 months. Wow! We know Skuna Bay Salmon can be a part of your New Year Resolution but how do we help you become successful?

I have been digging into why people don’t keep their resolutions. When searching the web and talking to friends and family, two of the most common reasons why goals are not achieved are unrealistic expectations and the resolution not becoming a habit. The Britannica Dictionary definition of “Habit” is a usual way of behaving, something that a person does often in a regular and repeated way. If we can make eating salmon a weekly habit, we can help achieve the protein requirement of eating healthy.

Google will tell you, “To make something a habit, start small, consistently repeat the action in a specific context, set clear cues to trigger the behavior, track your progress, and reward yourself for sticking to the routine; essentially, make the new action as easy as possible and gradually build upon it over time by linking it to existing routines or environmental triggers.”
Keeping that in mind, here are some thoughts to consider in helping you achieve your healthy eating New Year’s Resolution. Use the MyPlate tool to plan your healthy diet. Add salmon to your diet at least twice a week. Make eating salmon a habit. To do this, start by eating salmon once a week. Cue yourself by putting Skuna Bay Salmon on your weekly grocery list.
